Gentle Home Birth

This week has been very special to me. It began with the International day of the Midwife, Nurses week and ends with Mother's day. Being a mom, nurse, and midwife apprentice, I felt doubly blessed with being present at a beautiful gentle home birth this week. I was honored to take care of an amazing mama and hand her newborn baby into her loving arms.

My path has begun and there will be many more babies to come.

April 2013

It is almost a year since I consciously decided to follow the path of midwifery and many wonderful opportunities have easily presented themselves to confirm that my destiny is to be a baby catcher. I thought about it at different points in my life. However, last May I decided that the time is now and that I was not going to wait. I told a few close friends of my intention to become a midwife and they said that it gave them goose bumps and one of them even said: "you know when you get goose bumps it's a way of Spirit telling you that it is true and meant to be."

So two days after the day that I made the conscious decision that I wanted to embark on the journey, I won the book Botanical Medicine for Women's Health by Aviva Romm from her FB page which she signed and sent to me. And two days after that I met Ina May Gaskin at a book signing for her book Birth Matters.

I immediately fell in love with the path chosen and I applied to attend to the The Farm for a Midwifery Assistant workshop in September. They told me that the class was full and that I could apply for the next year. I was kind of upset about it, but I had a feeling that if it was meant to be, it would happen. Then in September I got a call from The Farm Clinic asking if I was able to attend the program in a week. I said yes and drove with my family to Tennessee the next week. The Farm and the Farm Midwives are amazing. It was a life changing and inspiring experience. And definitely an honor to learn from such loving wise midwives.

In November I went with my family to D.C. to learn from Jay & Marjie Hathaway and Susan McCutcheon to become Bradley Method Natural Childbirth Educators.

The week Alexandra turned a year old, I started attending prenatals and apprenticing with Rowan, my awesome midwife, friend, and teacher. The day of Alexandra's birth, I would have never thought that in a year I would be on the path that I am now. And I am ever so grateful to my children for teaching and guiding me on this journey.

My three year old daughter Emma just looked at this picture and she told me: "that's Rowan and she is beautiful!" I said: "yes, she is" and I thought how beautiful she is inside and out. She radiates love, peace, confidence and compassion in her work and as a woman and I am blessed to say that she was present at the birth of my daughter. I've been thinking about our life stories, and how she have become part of our life story. I am honored to call her friend and I deeply admire what she does.

International Day of the Midwife

Full Moon in Taurus

Today is May 5, 2012 and it is the International day of the Midwife. It is also a full moon in Taurus (an Earth sign) and it's the closest and largest full moon of the year. Midwives are in tune with the changes of the moon and Mother Earth. Most people know that more babies are born around the full moon. Midwives will tell you that's true, and also, as my midwife Rowan once told me: "more babies are born even when there is low barometric pressure." They are in tune with those things and they just know... Just as they are in tune with our bodies. Midwives know that most babies will come when it's their time and know not to force nature. Instead, they let nature flow and assist when needed.

My daughter Alexandra was born two weeks after her due date and at no time did I feel any pressure from my midwives that we should be speeding up the birth process. I was so uncomfortable and huge that I really wanted the baby to come out, but I also knew that she would be born when the time was right. I wish more women would be able to experience the joy of birthing when their baby is prepared to come earthside, not having the baby forced out, and on their own terms.

Midwives are the key holders to such a wonderful experience. I am ecstatic when I think of Alexandra's birth and I still feel that rush of joy. At the same time I feel saddened that not many women get to experience that and how the lives of thousands of women and babies are on the line from not having compassionate, competent, loving and respectful care.

I hope that with the energy of the full moon tonight and being the day of the Midwife that more positive energy is manifested for the thousands of babies and mothers needing care each day. I pray for less infant and maternal deaths. I pray that many more will continue to experience the amazing joy of birth.
